When Heather and Rhodri got married in Sydney’s most historic area, The Rocks, they simply couldn’t take their eyes off each other for the whole ceremony.
One of the (many) things I enjoy about marrying people is watching them as I conduct their ceremony. No matter what you practised in the rehearsal, when it comes to the wedding itself, emotion always takes over. Heather and Rhodri held hands, looked into each other’s eyes and stayed that way from the very beginning to the very end. Everyone else in the room melted away and it was all about them, in a little wedding ceremony bubble. And that’s how it should be. It put a big smile on my face as I talked about how they met and why they loved each other so much.
Sometimes couples are nervous and feel shy about being the centre of attention in front of a big group of people. I always tell them that you’ll be so “in the moment” that you won’t notice them. Just ask Heather and Rhodri!
Everything about their ceremony was deeply personal, from the rings (handed down from Grandmother), to Heather’s bouquet (made from comics, as they are both big comic fans) to the heartfelt vows they had written especially for each other.
My favourite bit? When we flipped a coin to decide who would do their vows first!
And at the end… a huge spontaneous round of applause brought them back to earth. That – and the champagne corks popping!
