Same sex marriage has been made legal in the ACT and it’s all over the news. As a gay marriage celebrant, I’ve been talking to Brisbane radio station 4BC News Talk.
Marriage Equality organisations have opened special registers for gay couples to sign up to, pledging their intention to marry in the ACT. More than 700 people have signed one such register in the past week alone.
There were jubilant scenes in the ACT Assembly earlier this week when the new laws were passed. Supports broke out into song and there was even a marriage proposal caught on camera by the TV crews.
But as expected, the Federal Government has launched a High Court challenge. Those who drafted the bill expected it to be challenged, and they say it should survive. But other legal experts are unsure if it will stand up. It’s certainly going to be an interesting few weeks ahead, to say the least.
