No, not the movie – this is a love story like no other! It was the perfect location, the perfect weather, the perfect couple, and of course – the perfect ceremony.
Barry and Sally chose the Rock Cathedral at Kangaroo Valley Bush Retreat for their wedding. They both felt an immediate empathy with it because of its spiritual and historical connections. Guests came from far and wide and they all loved the location with its breathtaking views. The weather was kind and we had wonderful winter sunshine, as we watched the wombats waddling and kangaroos bouncing past!
Barry and Sally had prepared an awesome wedding website for guests which also told the story of how they met – so for their ceremony, we concentrated very much on feelings, and celebrating both their loving connections and those of their family and friends. To honour Barry’s Irish heritage, we included a unique handfasting ceremony. We laid out two green ribbons along the aisle and as his sister tied their hands, the rings were threaded on to the ribbons at the back and passed hand to hand by the guests along to the front. It was a great way to make a symbolic connection between everyone present. Everyone made a special wish for them as they passed the rings forward.
So many nice touches too – Dad had planted a special pot of beautiful flowers which bloomed just at the right time. He’d also made a special wooden ring holder. Lots of friends and family had roles to play, so it was inclusive and fun. And we also had my favourite Dr Seuss wedding reading!
The day after, I was driving back to Sydney and I stopped off in Berry for coffee. I was stopped by two people who’d been guests at the wedding, who were also heading home. As we were chatting, they asked me how long I’d been friends with Barry and Sally. Having heard the ceremony, they assumed I was a long time friend of theirs who by happy coincidence was also a Celebrant. That’s the best compliment – and showed that between us all, we’d got things spot on!
